I noticed a lot of folks mentioning in the card requests that they are new, so I figured that maybe it's time for another chatter post!
How are you all doing? I know that here in the US there's been some serious weather going on, so I hope that everyone is healthy and happy and safe.
For the ice breaker topic, how about: weather! What's the weather like where your characters live? What's their favorite (or least favorite) type of weather?
Also, new folks! Feel free to pull up a chair and introduce yourselves and your muses. As we haven't been doing any advertising about for a long while, I'm curious how you all got here. How did you hear about our challenge?
Have fun, and happy writing, everyone!

Date: 2011-05-07 03:25 am (UTC). . . .and I seem to have a thing for weather Extremes, in terms of writing, except for Without Accident which I have yet to accurately geographically place, except that it's not the Wet Coast, and it is somewhere near where, in our world, the Canada/US border is (in there world, there's no longer separate countries.)
Otherwise, we have Castalin, which is north and up mountains and thus at home to all kinds of Fucking Cold and Full of Snow, which shapes pretty much every aspect of their lives and culture, and then there's the world for Empress in Iron, where An-garat is situated in the middle of a desert, making water the premium piece of wealth.

Date: 2011-05-07 03:47 am (UTC)I always love it when worldbuilding makes cultures a product of their environments like that. Or when cultures make their environments all the more clearer, as tends to happen in my stories....<3!

Date: 2011-05-07 03:51 am (UTC)Castalin arose from my constant frustration with the way 95% of stories and tv-shows and movies and so on portray cold, and living with cold, and acting around cold. I come from a place with -40C winters, and almost all depictions of cold environments I've ever come across are just . . . wrong. Sometimes in the main, almost always in the details. (I love Avatar: The Last Airbender, but it is so very, very guilty of this; every time we visit a Water Tribe, I end up going "why is her mitt off? HER HAND IS FREEZING. Oh, god, they're WET, they're going to start dying of hypothermia in about thirty seconds, and also, her eyelashes have frozen shut, and - ")
And always miss the little wonderful things, like how the air sparkles on a really cold, clear, still day, because of every single ice-crystal in the air catching the sun. Etc, etc.
Thus, Castalin.
. . . my desert ones are pretty much enterprises in me trying to make sure I don't fall victim to the opposite, but I have actually lived in deserts, and a lot more (accurate) stuff gets written about them.

Date: 2011-05-07 04:18 am (UTC)I have always been kind of fascinated with extreme cold environments. I'm not sure what it is...maybe some of it's the isolation since such places aren't usually huge metropolises, but part of it's also the adaptation necessary to live there, and the little things like your sparkly air, that you never get to see anywhere else....

Date: 2011-05-07 04:26 am (UTC)It's just people don't think of it. Or how whatever it is that's around your face needs to be able to shed the ice from your breath. Or else it'll just melt and refreeze against your skin, chafing the shit out of it (again: fur is useful, here.)

Date: 2011-05-07 04:16 am (UTC)But spring is just late, here, every year. The trees are just putting out green buds that will form leaves, and the crocuses I planted last year sent up spears last weekend.

Date: 2011-05-09 10:28 pm (UTC)The weather's been very wet lately, despite the fact that this is supposed to be Hawaii, the paradise state. Lies, lies, lies.
I have misplaced my umbrella. Am doomed to walk in the rain to bus stop again tonight.
Bingo card not even close to being done, ahaha.

Date: 2011-05-07 07:29 am (UTC)Camar'a is pretty temperate, shoreline is really nice for temperatures, even in in winter, it's where most of my fruit grows such as oranges, pears and such.
Royale in the south is a great plains, very cold winters (-30 to -40) but lots of snow and good rain so much of my crop comes from there.
And on a different note it's supposed to be a warmer then normal dry summer here in Alberta again >.< I do not like!

Date: 2011-05-07 07:55 am (UTC)I think most of the characters at Third Higher prefer autumn and spring (winter is the worst when you have to spend your days in classrooms and dorms without central heating).

Date: 2011-05-07 01:38 pm (UTC)As for my characters and weather, one of my universes takes place in a tropical type climate, but the rest are not.
I do have one character who loathes the rain and flails whenever he's rained on, but water is a weakness of his, so it's understandable.

Date: 2011-05-09 01:49 am (UTC)I'm Mouse, another new face. I've lived on the Wet Coast and a little in the tropics, so most of my settings have weather parallels to either of these locales. :'D
